All the Birds: My Life List

It’s called a Life List, a record of every species of birds you’ve seen, but in my house it’s referred to as “All the Birds”— as in “did you see all the birds?” The “yet” is implied.

I’ve kept lists of birds in the past. However, in May 2020, I resumed formally logging birds again, this time using eBird (see my eBird profile). It is far better method than a handwritten list forgotten in a field guide.

My Life List has grown since, but while identifying and ticking off new birds is fun and informative, I’ve also been trying to get pictures of All the Birds, both in my yard and in the world at large. To that end, I’ve started collecting them into galleries of birds.

How to Count All Your Birds:

Observe all birds ethically and respectfully (see Ethical Birding and Nature Photography)
Only living birds count (so the dead Northern Parula I found in our yard with a wound did not count, the one perching in a tree a month later did)
Birds need to be free, not captive nor escaped (so no rehabs, pets, or zoos, although I do enjoy Chewonki’s bird talks).
Also, eBird classifies some populations as exotic/escaped, and they won’t count (* for ex. the Ring-Necked Pheasants on Monhegan).
You can ID a bird by sound alone (and props to those who can), but I lack that skill and wouldn’t rely on it for a first-time ID. I do use Merlin’s sound ID to reinforce learning songs and to suggest birds to look for in the area. However, I don’t log those on a checklist without visual confirmation. I personally need to see the bird and get a picture I can study later for a first time ID. Merlin is an amazing app, but don’t blindly accept its suggested birds by sound without more info.
